When it comes to finding a career in the fashion design industry it is not maybe as simple as one would think. Studies show that in the UK and US, four out of ten designers are self-employed. Other surveys show that the more mature graduates from college face an even bigger challenge in establishing themselves, and are even more likely to be self-employed. It can take quite some time to establish oneself as a fashion designer, building a network and contacts, not to mention a reputation. It is vital to maintain relationships with friends and colleagues, as many jobs are obtained through word of mouth.
