Most experts agree that babies need about 14 hours of sleep each night while children attending first through fifth grades should get as much as 11 hours of sleep. Grown ups would benefit greatly from 10 hours of sleep but 8 hours is usually enough.
With the breadth of TV programming these days, it seems there should be some good reason to have a television in the bedroom, but heath care professionals admonish, “just say no.” Distractions, particularly late at night, really interfere with sleep. When we don’t get ample rest, we can be irritable and make poor decisions. Drivers who hit the roads without enough sleep cause a considerable number of crashes each year. Sometimes, no one walks away alive.
Environmental factors are key to everyone’s ability to get a good night’s sleep. If the bedroom is too hot or too cold, you are likely to toss and turn. A bright light, even from a computer mouse or a telephone can suddenly interrupt sleep.
