We’re in the planning stages of a home renovation project, and one of the things we’re having trouble deciding is what type of window treatments we want to use. Curtains and draperies seem like a good traditional choice, but they aren’t as popular as they once were. Plus, we have allergies in the home so it seems to me like they would be a dust collector, compared to other types. Window blinds are a better option, as far as I’m concerned, but the cost seems to be a lot higher. I guess we’re just going to have to do a little more research before making our decision.
Don’t worry about what’s popular. You’ll have these window treatments for years, so they’ll come back into fashion at some point. Go with what you like, and don’t worry about the current trends unless you’re planning to sell your house anytime soon.
You’re right – do some more research. One of the previous comments is right, there might not be as big a price difference as you think there is. Especially if you choose a less expensive material for your blinds.
We hung blinds in our house a few years ago and I don’t think I could go back to curtains. Blinds are so much easier to clean, and they really do look a lot classier.
I would head down to your local home center and get them to come out and give you a quote on blinds and curtains. You might find there’s not as big a price difference between them as you think there is.
Why not get a combination of curtains and blinds? You can put curtains in some rooms, blinds in others. Give each room its own decor so you can enjoy different environments, depending on your mood.
I prefer blinds personally. I think they look classier, and they’ll last a lot longer if you take care of them. You’ll spend more, but if they last longer you can wind up saving money in the long run, right?
I got rid of our curtains and replaced them with wood blinds a couple of years ago and it made a huge difference in the air quality. Our son has asthma, and it seems to have helped his breathing.
I prefer curtains, personally. They’re easier to clean and they’re a lot more forgiving of active kids and pets. Just make sure you get a material that doesn’t have to be dry cleaned so you can wash them at home.
