Constipation is an important cause of morbidity, and its treatment consumes significant US healthcare resources. It affects at least 10% of the general population and 25% of the elderly. In 2002, $ 386 million was spent on laxatives; in 2005, $ 354 million was spent on healthcare services for patients with constipation. Expenditures are likely to be much higher on oxygen based colon cleanser today because of escalating costs, better diagnostic facilities, and a rising incidence of the problem.
