In a primary care trust (or local health board in Wales and Scotland) the pharmacist may have a lead role for all issues related to medicines management and prescribing. This may include ensuring evidence based prescribing practice, formulary development, financial management of prescribing allocations or budgets, interface issues with local acute trusts and supply of medicines to community units which come under the management of the PCT/LHB. The role may also include providing professional input into service planning and delivery where medicines management or pharmacy issues may be a key issue. Education and training of prescribers and other healthcare professionals e.g. smoking cessation co-ordinators may also be a function of this role. Often this pharmacy job role also encompasses professional input to community pharmacy contract and development issues and clinical governance arrangements on behalf of the PCT/LHB. In PCTs/LHBs there may be a team of primary care pharmacists each taking a lead for one or more of these specific areas of work.
