For over 30 years, many music articles will list Miriam Makeba as persona non granta in her homeland of South Africa. During the days of white minority rule and apartheid, the outspoken and extremists risked both imprisonment and death and they hence only found refuge in foreign lands. Miriam Makeba belonged to this group.The return of Miriam Makeba to South Africa only became a possibility when apartheid ended with the historic release of Nelson Mandela from prison in 1990. South Africa had consequently entered a new era. In December of 1990, Miriam Makeba returned to South Africa and the following year performed to a huge crowd in her motherland.
